When to replace your phone battery

Phone batteries wear out with use. After a couple of years of daily charging, most hold noticeably less charge than when they were new. These are the usual signs it is time for a new one:

• Your phone is flat by lunchtime, even with light use.
• It shuts down suddenly at 20% or 30%, or when the camera or GPS is on.
• It gets hot while charging or during simple tasks.
• On an iPhone, Settings > Battery > Battery Health shows a low maximum capacity or a "Service" message.
• The screen is lifting, or the back looks pushed out. This can mean a swollen battery.

If your battery looks swollen, stop charging the phone and switch it off. A swollen battery can damage the screen and is a safety risk. Book a repair as soon as you can, at any hour.

Why a new battery beats a new phone

For many phones, a battery replacement costs a fraction of a new handset and brings back a full day of use. If the rest of the phone works well, it is usually the cheapest way to keep it going for another year or two. If your phone has other problems as well, we will tell you honestly whether the repair is worth it.

Battery options

For most models we list one battery replacement price, which includes the battery, fitting and testing. For some Samsung models we also list an "Original" battery at a different price, so you can choose. Some tablets and Galaxy Z Fold phones have two batteries ("Main" and "Sub"), which are priced separately.

On newer iPhones, a replacement battery may show an "Unknown part" message in Settings. The battery still works normally. Ask us before you book if this matters to you.

How long does a battery replacement take?

Most phone battery replacements take 30 minutes to 2 hours once your phone is with us and the battery is in stock. Tablets and some foldables take 1 to 3 business days. The expected time for your model is shown next to its price.

What we check

• That the problem really is the battery, not a faulty charging port, cable or software issue.
• That the new battery charges and reports correctly.
• That the phone is sealed properly after the repair. Like any opened phone, it should not be treated as water-resistant afterwards.

Looking after your new battery

• Avoid leaving your phone in a hot car or in direct sun. Heat wears batteries out faster than anything else.
• Use the built-in charging limits: Optimised Charging on iPhone and battery protection on Samsung and Pixel.
• Use a decent-quality cable and charger. Cheap chargers can heat the battery and damage the charging port.
• You don't need to drain the battery to 0% before charging. Topping up during the day is fine.
